It is believed that the Hindu spiritual teachers invented the game of Moksha Patamu which was mainly to teach children about the good deed and bad deed. The ladders represented humbleness, generosity, faith and other good things.
The snakes on the other side signified anger, lust, theft, and murder. The moral of the game was the person who did good attained Moksha or Salvation whereas the evil takes rebirth called Patamu.
The Ladders were lesser in number compared to the Snakes which was a reminder that good work is hard to do than committing sins. The "100" is believed to have been used to signify salvation. In the modern game of snakes and ladders there are several rules. Altogether it is an interesting game and a fun pastime.
