Carrom

Carrom is one of those popular traditional games that are played in the modern times with equal spirit. The carrom game consists of a family of games that are played on tabletop. The traditional game of carrom shares a lot of similarity with billiards and table shuffleboard in mechanics. The game of carrom is known by a variety of other names all over the world. These names include karum, carrum, karam, carum, karom, and Nepalese or Indian finger billiards. When it comes to birthday gifts, carrom board makes an ideal choice. This game can be gifted to the children and also the old people.

There is no clear account of the origin of this game. However, as per the majority of the source, it carrom has its roots in India. There are many researchers who claim that the game has originated from China. There are also suggestions that the game could have come from North Africa, Yemen, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. In the western countries, where carrom has similarities with billiards, it could have also had an independent development as a combination of both shuffleboard and billiards. Wherever be its birth, the game of carrom is really great to play.

The game of carrom is played on a lacquered plywood board which normally has a playing surface of 29 inch square. The edges of the board are bordered by wood bumpers. It is quite similar to billiards in the playing pattern, the only difference being, there are disks instead of balls. These disks are called coins or pucks. The main objective of the game is flicking or striking the coins with a comparatively heavier and bigger disk through finger. The heavier disk is called striker and the smaller ones which are struck are called carrom men or carrom seeds. The motive of the game is to propel these carrom seeds into one of the 4 pockets that are there in each corner of the board.
The carrom men are of two colors and this denotes two players or two teams of doubles each. Traditionally, the colors of these carrom men are unstained or white and black. As per the rule of the game, the breaker takes white. There is also an additional carrom man which is of red color and is known as the queen. The rule of the game is potting down your own 9 carrom seeds before your opponent. However, before potting your final carrom seed, the queen or the red carrom man must be sunk. There are penalties called Fouls which lead to the return of the player’s struck carrom man back to the board.
