During the ancient times, the blue pottery was believed to be an important craft of India. According to history the king of Rajasthan, Ram Singh II patronized art. So he built up a school of art in Jaipur. Here many artisans and craftsmen came from all over the world to learn art. So the art of blue pottery was brought to Jaipur from some of the foreign artisans. During the reign of Maharaja the blue pottery became one of the most loved forms of art.

The blue pottery is produced by the blue texture on a pottery. This blue color is made by oxidizing the element cobalt while the green is derived from the elements like chromium and copper oxides. This gives the pottery a greenish blue color. Nowadays the artisans are also experimenting with other colors such as yellow ochre which is derived from cadmium oxide, reddish tinch from iron oxide and dark blue. The motifs and patterns are usually floral. Sometimes the blue pottery also has images of dancers, animals and birds.

The art of blue pottery has been derived from Persia. It was once the famous art of Delhi. The blue pottery consist of various articles but the the most traditional ones are the surahis or pots. They come in different shapes and size for multiple use. The things made out of blue pottery consists of ash tray, tiles, flower pots, lamp shades, jars, decorative items, accessories and kitchen wares.

This particular form of art has been named as blue pottery due to its appealing Persian blue dye which is applied to color the baked clay. The blue pottery has a glazing effect because it is fired at high temperatures which increases its endurability than other pottery.

It is quite clean and hygienic for everyday use. Nowadays the blue pottery is also semi-transparent with different interesting motifs. Some of the blue pottery items are made from Egyptian paste, and baked at low temperatures. Though it increases its fragility, but very few can resist the charm of this delicate blue pottery on which white floral motifs are designed.
