Art of Pottery Making

The term “pottery” is used to describe the ceramic ware which is crafted out by the artisans called potters. The art of pottery making is very interesting and has been prevalent in many countries across the globe. The art of pottery making is one of the oldest forms of art in the world. In general the term pottery is used to refer to ceramic items which include every thing from porcelain, earthen ware to stone ware. There are several steps involved in the pottery making art.

The art of pottery making involves giving desired shapes to a clay body and heating them in a kiln for hardening and giving permanent shapes. However, even though the basic process remains the same, there are variations in some steps in different countries. Also, the type of clay can vary according to the different geographical regions and this leads to the production of wares that have characteristics unique to a locality. Normally the clays and minerals are mixed for the production of structures for specific purposes. One such example is the terracotta flowering pot where the clay body is slightly porous.

Depending on the kind of shape you want to give your pottery, the art of pottery making differs. There are several stages involved in the process of drying of the clay ware. In many cases drying is not even required before firing. When the clay is 75-85% dry it is referred to as leather hard. This is the stage when trimming as well as handle attachment is done. Bone-dry stage refers to the condition when the moisture content is reduced to 0%. The clay objects which do not undergo firing are called greenware.
The pottery gets its shape as it turns on the wheel. One of the basic tools for shaping the pottery is the hand itself. But over the years a number of tools were developed which help in the shaping of the pottery. These include anvils, ribs and paddles. For the purpose of rolling, tools like slab rollers, roulettes and rolling pins are useful. Then there are these cutting or piercing tools like knives, wires and fluting tools which are used for developing the pottery.

The finishing tools like burnishing stones, chamois and rasps are used for giving a proper finishing touch to the pottery item so formed. The Handwork or hand building pottery that belongs to Kathmandu, Nepal is the earliest method of pottery shaping. Potter’s kick wheel is common in Gülsehir, Turkey and Erfurt, Germany. Jiggering and jolleying, Roller-head machine, RAM pressing, Granulate pressing and Slip casting are the other methods of pottery shaping.
