The Le Reve painting was later sold off at Christie's auction house. It was on the 11th of November, 1997 that the auction took place at Christie's house. At that point of time, the painting was sold off at a price of US $48.4 million, making it the 6th most expensive painting in the world. Wolfgang Flottl, an Austrian investment fund manager, was the buyer of the painting at Christie's auction house.
Wolfgang Flottl was also the owner of the Vincent Van Gogh painting, Portrait of Dr Gachet for a brief period of time. When the financial condition of the Austrian investment fund manager deteriorated, he sold off the painting to Steve Wynn, a popular and rich casino owner.

The Le Reve became an important part of the art collection of Steve Wynn. But even Steve Wynn was not able to keep the prized possession in his collection of paintings. In the month of October, 2006 Wynn sold the painting at a staggering price of US $139 million to Steven A Cohen.
